Philippines seeks 'terrorist' tag vs UN special rapporteur, 600 suspected Reds

A petition is now made to be presented by President Rodrigo Duterte to the Regional Trial Court after signing the proclamation declaring Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) along with its armed coalition, New People’s Army (NPA) as a Terrorist Organization.
This pronouncement is in accordance to Republic Act (RA) 9372 known as the Human Security Act, attributed to terrorism with strong basis under the Republic Act 10168 or the Terrorism Financing Prevention and Suppression Act of 2012.
The provision will allow the government to utilize means and resources to closely scrutinize the rebels’ location and activities, monitor their finances, hamper their resources, among other things.

Surprisingly, among these rebels that were tagged as one of the members of the now “terrorist group” is Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, an appointed U.N Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Although there were no known details as to her direct involvement with the rebels, she was a former activist who helped mobilize the Indigenous Peoples to go about against the projects of the late Former President Ferdinand Marcos, and a Senior Member of the Maoist Rebel Group.

The petition also suggested to include the other top 18 officials of the Rebel Organization and committee members including Jose Maria Sison, its Founder, and former priest-turned-rebel leader, Luis Jalandoni which are now residing in Netherlands for decades.

Sison was a former mentor of President Duterte at the Lyceum University in Manila and now turned adversaries reportedly due to ongoing and relentless attacks instigated by the NPA to the public while the Peace Process was ongoing during the early months of the President’s term.

Satur Ocampo, a former congressman was also on the list.

Ocampo has a pending criminal case for his involvement in the murder of suspected military spies in the communist movements.

Citing that these were ‘deceitful’ actions continually overlooked by Sison and other top rebel officials, resorted to Duterte’s motivation to annihilate threats that allegedly overthrow the government and cause violence.

These, despite the President’s primary initiative to find lasting solutions to resolve decades-long conflict with the armed group.
