Female UP Student among 6 captured in NPA Negros fight

Recent clash between NPA and the 62nd Infantry (Unifier) Battalion, 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division Philippine Army led to the capture of 6 rebels, including 1 female, whose identity is unknown and allegedly a Mass Communications student of the University of the Philippines (UP), Cebu along with 2 other minors believed to be recruited from Negros Occidental and Oriental regions.
The exchange of fires began when troops of the 62nd Infantry were conducting a security patrol along Sitio Tumonon of Brgy. Luyang in Mabinay, Negros Oriental when more or less 20 Armed men, allegedly, members of the NPA, abruptly started firing at the troops to which quickly reacted and backfired that lasted for about 45 minutes.

Some powerful firearms that were recovered from the 6 captured Terrorists are: M16A1, M16A1 with M203 Grenade launcher, 2 M4 Rifles, 1 VLTOR (M16), 1 AG 43 (M16), rifle grenades, explosive devices, food rations, and revolutionary documents. There were no reported casualties to this incident.

Innocent civilians in the area have long been violated with harassment and extortion by the NPA which have overheard the office of Commanding General LTC Darell R. Bañez which immediately ordered the deployment of the troops in the said patrol.

Two isolated incidents were also discovered, both initiated by the NPA in the Municipality of La Castellana where they burned a working Tractor, and a Sugarcane Truck Hauler in Canlaon City.
Intelligence suggested that the rebels also built a campsite in Brgy Samac of Mabinay and Brgy Panciao, Manjuyod, both of Negros Oriental by the Peace Security Patrol troops prior to the encounter in Brgy. Luyang.

In a statement, 303rd Brigade Commander Brigadier General Losañes said, "it is a clear manifestation that the people themselves are tired of these armed NPA Terrorists conducting extortion, harassment and recruitment of minors as terrorists. Furthermore, despite the encounter, the capture of the six Communist Terrorists who were unharmed clearly shows the troops’ adherence to the principles of Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law and Rule of Law with its primacy of preserving human lives. With our continuous combat operation against the communist terrorists, we encourage the CPP-NPA Terrorists to lay down their arms, return to the folds of the law and avail the Government’s Comprehensive Local Integration Program and live a normal and peaceful life"
The likelihood of young students and minors alike, particularly from UP have notoriously been increasing in the recent years leaning from a long-term discontent with bureaucrat capitalism, feudalism, and imperialism (by the US) to violent extremism even to our local community.

This was greatly influenced by CPP-NPA Founder Jose Maria Sison, who himself was former student activist and a UP alumna in 1959.
