President Duterte signs free irrigation law

Farmers can now enjoy free irrigation after the Congress-approved bill, denominated as Republic Act No. 10969, was signed on February 2 by President Rodrigo Duterte wherein, House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas sent journalists a copy of it on February 8.
The recently approved law exempts farmers, tilling eight hectares and below, from paying irrigation fees to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), other state agencies and irrigators’ associations (IAs).

Aside from that, the unpaid fees, including interest and penalties, owed by farmers to the NIA and also the loans, interest and surcharges obtained or incurred by IAs from NIA are condoned.

Rules and regulations will be implemented by the NIA.

“will translate to more money in the pockets of our farmers.” Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles said.
“We laud President Duterte for making free irrigation a reality for our farmers. This law will definitely jump start the modernization of Philippine agriculture and, more importantly, unlock endless earning opportunities for our farmers,” he added.
