Roque responds to his fellow UP professor’s: Hindi ako magreresign dahil tama ang Presidente

During the Black Friday protest for press freedom last January 17, UP College of Mass Communication professor Danilo Arao, fellow UP professor of Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, made a call for Roque to resign or turn his back to continue their fight for Human Rights..
I hope you are listening. You need to resign because I know that deep inside, you can’t stomach what you are doing)” Arao said

According to Arao, he and Roque used to worked on campaigns that promote press freedom, fighting laws which they deemed infringed on the constitutional guarantee of a free press, including the Anti-Cyber-crime Act.

How many times did we talk about the campaign against cybercrime law, about the justice on Ampatuan massacre, about the solution to end the culture impunity, including other laws that control press freedom)” Arao said.

What’s is happening to you now? It seems that you’ve changed. You even told Rappler to focus on blogging. It seems that you are creating conflicts between bloggers and journalists” Arao said.

If you don’t want to resign, then you totally renounce of becoming stalwart of human rights and press freedom. You also admit that this is all for your selfish goal as opportunist just to win the election in 2019) ” Arao said.

In a press conference in Kalibo, Aklan, Roque responded to Arao’s call for resignation  and rejected it. Despite the friendship they have established back when they were still a member campaigns promoting press freedom and fought laws which they deemed infringed on the constitutional guarantee of a free press, including the Anti-Cybercrime Act.

I don’t need to prove anythibg when it comes to my stand against press freedom. A lot of journalists that we fought for but were still charged of Libel and killed) He said.

Hindi po ako mag-aatubili, magre-resign ako!(If I found out that the President is really violation Human Rights, then I would resign)” he said.

He knows the importance of press freedom and the media will criticize him)” Roque added.

Arao made the call for Roque’s resignation in response to the (SEC) Securities and Exchange Commission’s decision to revoke Rappler’s license to operate and wondered on Roque’s switch of belief on press freedom since he became the Presidential Spokesperson.

Roque, clarified that the SEC’s decision to revoke Rappler’s license to operate is not an attack on press freedom.

Usaping pera po iyan, salapi, kuwarta,(On the issue of Rappler’s fund raising, it violated the Philippine contitution because foreigners are not allowed to have a control on mass media. That talks about money)” he said.
