Fellow UP prof tells Roque to resign: Alam ko deep inside hindi mo nasisikmura ang ginagawa mo

A call for Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque from his fellow University of the Philippines (UP) professor, UP College of Mass Communication professor Danilo Arao, during the Black Friday protest for press freedom on January 19, asking him to resign instead of pretending to defend the violations of press freedom, like what happened to Rappler when Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) decided to revoke its license to operate due to the violation of the constitutional and statutory Foreign Equity Restrictions in Mass Media.
I hope you are listening. You need to resign because I know that deep inside, you can’t stomach what you are doing” Arao said

According to Arao, he and Roque used to worked on campaigns that promote press freedom, fighting laws which they deemed infringed on the constitutional guarantee of a free press, including the Anti-Cyber-crime Act.

How many times did we talk about the campaign against cybercrime law, about the justice on Ampatuan massacre, about the solution to end the culture impunity, including other laws that control press freedom)” Arao said.

Arao said that Roque has changed and if he would still stay as President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesperson, it only means that he is an opportunist so that he would benefit on his 2019 election run.

What’s is happening to you now? It seems that you’ve changed. You even told Rappler to focus on blogging. It seems that you are creating conflicts between bloggers and journalists” Arao said.
If you don’t want to resign, then you totally renounce of becoming stalwart of human rights and press freedom. You also admit that this is all for your selfish goal as opportunist just to win the election in 2019) ” Arao said.

Roque was a professor in the UP College of Law, known for handling human rights cases that include press freedom cases, back when he was still not the presidential spokesperson and a representaive of Kabayan Party-list in the 17th Congress.

He was also a counsel for the journalists who were slain in the 2008 Ampatuan massacre and for murdered journalist Gerry Ortega.

He had been a petitioner in several press freedom cases before the Supreme Court (SC) and has assailed former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Proclamation 1017 and General Order No. 5, for infringing the freedom of speech and the press.
He was also among the lawyers who argued before the SC against the Cybercrime Act.
